Katherine Rose Sparks, Assault on a Federal Officer with a Deadly Weapon, Arizona 2017

Katherine Rose Sparks, 23, of Huachuca City, Arizona, is headed to federal prison for 84 months after slamming her SUV into reverse while a Border Patrol agent was trapped under the passenger door during a high-speed marijuana run. Sparks was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Rosemary Marquez in Tucson and ordered to pay $49,930.73 in restitution for injuries inflicted on the officer. She pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute marijuana and assault on a federal officer with a dangerous or deadly weapon. Her prison term will be followed by five years of supervised release.

The violence erupted on February 23, 2017, when a U.S. Border Patrol surveillance unit spotted an SUV near Bisbee being loaded with suspicious bundles. Agents tailed the vehicle west on Highway 92 until it stopped at a red light on the San Pedro River bridge. Instead of surrendering, the driver veered off the road, careened down a steep embankment, and tore across rough terrain at high speed—briefly going airborne over a trench before getting stuck in a ditch.

Two Border Patrol Agents approached the SUV from both sides. When the passenger refused to exit, one agent opened the door and attempted to remove him. That’s when Sparks, still behind the wheel and engine running, slammed the vehicle into reverse. The sudden movement pinned the agent under the open door, dragging him as the SUV lurched backward. The passenger scrambled back inside during the chaos, and only after the agent broke free did the door shut.

Sparks then managed to free the SUV and fled eastbound on Highway 92. Agents recovered the vehicle the next day, still packed with bundles of marijuana. Investigators later identified Sparks as the driver. The entire incident was a brazen act of defiance against federal law enforcement in one of Arizona’s most active drug smuggling corridors.

The injured agent was rushed to Canyon Vista Medical Center in Sierra Vista, where he underwent extensive surgery for severe knee injuries. The physical toll and long recovery underscore the risks Border Patrol agents face daily in remote stretches of southern Arizona, where traffickers routinely use high-speed evasion and violence to escape capture.

The FBI’s Sierra Vista field office led the investigation. Erica L. Seger, Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona, prosecuted the case. Case number CR-17-00478-TUC. Release number 2017-012_Sparks. # # #
