TACOMA, WA – Peter James Hufferd, 47, is headed back to prison after a federal judge handed down a 14-year sentence for enticing minors online. The registered sex offender, already twice-convicted of related crimes, continued his predatory behavior while under federal supervision in Seattle, authorities announced today.
U.S. Attorney Brian T. Moran revealed that Hufferd used a hidden cell phone to connect with young girls on platforms like SnapChat, Instagram, and Tumblr. He successfully convinced at least two of them to send him sexually explicit images, demonstrating a chilling pattern of abuse. At sentencing, U.S. District Judge Ronald B. Leighton didn’t mince words, stating Hufferd presented “a danger to society.” He will also face 20 years of supervised release following his prison term.
This isn’t Hufferd’s first rodeo. Records show he completed a ten-year prison sentence in April 2017, after which he was placed on federal supervision and permitted a single, *monitored* cell phone. He clearly circumvented this restriction, obtaining an additional device to pursue his sick obsession. His initial conviction came in 2003 in Clallam County Superior Court, where he received 85 days in custody for possessing child pornography. Back then, law enforcement discovered he was posing as a 15-year-old girl online to lure potential victims.
The depravity deepened in 2008, leading to another ten-year prison term. A concerned father discovered his 12-year-old daughter was engaged in sexually explicit conversations with Hufferd – again, using the same fabricated teenage persona. Investigators found over 300 images of child sexual abuse on his computer, and horrifyingly, evidence that Hufferd was encouraging the girl to self-harm. This latest case began to unravel in March 2018 when a routine search of Hufferd’s sex offender residence by U.S. Probation officers uncovered the unauthorized cell phone. A subsequent court-authorized search warrant exposed his latest round of illegal communications.
Homeland Security Investigations spearheaded the investigation, meticulously building the case against Hufferd. Assistant United States Attorney Brian Werner skillfully prosecuted the case, ensuring Hufferd faced the full weight of the law. The evidence was irrefutable, and the judge clearly saw Hufferd for who he is: a predator who repeatedly victimizes vulnerable children, even while supposedly under supervision. The 14-year sentence is a small measure of justice, but it won’t erase the harm he’s caused.
Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the ongoing efforts to protect children from online predators. Anyone with information about potential child exploitation should immediately contact the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children or their local law enforcement agency. This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking online and the importance of vigilance.
