MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA – A Hugo man is facing federal time after admitting to a vicious assault on tribal land. Travis Paul Lindsey, age 24, pleaded guilty this week to Assault with a Dangerous Weapon with Intent to do Bodily Harm in Indian Country, a charge carrying a hefty prison sentence.

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma confirmed the guilty plea, stemming from an incident that occurred on or about October 4, 2014. Lindsey knowingly and intentionally attacked T.B., identified as a Native American, by striking him with a dangerous weapon, according to court documents. The details of the weapon used have not been released.

The case was a joint effort between the Choctaw Nation Tribal Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, highlighting the increased cooperation between tribal and federal law enforcement agencies in prosecuting crimes within Indian Country. The investigation uncovered evidence leading directly to Lindsey’s involvement in the brutal attack.

Magistrate Judge Steven P. Shreder accepted the guilty plea and has ordered a presentence investigation report to be compiled. Sentencing is pending completion of that report, and Lindsey remains on bond in the meantime. Court officials have not indicated when sentencing will be scheduled.

Lindsey now faces a statutory maximum of 10 years imprisonment and a fine of up to $250,000.00. The severity of the sentence will depend on factors outlined in the presentence report, including the extent of T.B.’s injuries and Lindsey’s criminal history, if any.

Assistant United States Attorney Dean Burris is prosecuting the case on behalf of the United States. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the sentencing when it is announced. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the violence that continues to plague Indian Country and the dedication of law enforcement to bring perpetrators to justice.”
