OKLAHOMA CITY – Hunter Eugene Berry, 23, of Harrah, Oklahoma, is facing 15 years behind bars after a reckless high-speed chase culminated in a dangerous standoff with law enforcement and a federal conviction for illegal firearm possession. U.S. Attorney Robert J. Troester announced the sentencing yesterday, marking the maximum penalty for the charge.
The chaos began January 5th when authorities responded to reports of a reckless driver tearing through northeast Oklahoma County. Berry, refusing to yield, led officers on a terrifying pursuit reaching speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour. Witnesses and helicopter footage from Oklahoma City Police and local news crews captured Berry driving into oncoming traffic, forcing multiple vehicles off the road – including a school bus filled with children.
The spree didn’t stop there. During the chase, Berry brazenly stole a firearm from a parked vehicle in Oklahoma County. He then allegedly discharged the stolen weapon at pursuing law enforcement officers, escalating the situation from reckless endangerment to attempted assault. The vehicle Berry was driving was itself reported stolen earlier that day, adding another layer to his criminal conduct.
On March 9, 2023, a federal grand jury indicted Berry on two counts: being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession of a stolen firearm. He pleaded guilty to the first charge on May 17, 2023. U.S. District Judge Patrick R. Wyrick delivered the 180-month (15-year) sentence, followed by three years of supervised release. Judge Wyrick didn’t mince words, describing the chase as “horrifying and frightening” and highlighting the grave danger Berry posed to the public.
Berry’s past also came into play during sentencing. He already held a felony conviction for burglary in the first degree, Oklahoma County District Court case number CF-19-336. The investigation was a collaborative effort led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), alongside the Oklahoma City Police Department, Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office, and several other local agencies including Jones, Harrah, and Luther Police Departments. Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel Gridley prosecuted the case.
This case falls under “Operation Shots Fired,” a key component of the Western District of Oklahoma’s implementation of Project Safe Neighborhoods – a Department of Justice initiative aimed at reducing gun violence and enforcing federal firearms laws. The operation specifically targets individuals who use firearms in the commission of crimes, from drive-by shootings to domestic disputes. The message is clear: discharging a firearm during criminal activity will draw the full weight of federal prosecution.
