Antigo Man Sentenced to 30 Months in Federal Prison for Marijuana Conspiracy
"John M. Hunter, a 36-year-old man from Antigo, Wisconsin, has been sentenced to 30 months in federal prison for his role in a large-scale marijuana conspiracy, announced United States Attorney James L. Santelle of the Eastern District of Wisconsin.
Hunter was responsible for the distribution of over 50 kilograms of marijuana and over 1,500 grams of cocaine in the Langlade County area and in southeastern Wisconsin between May 2009 and August 2011. His drug distribution network included numerous employees of the Merrill and Antigo School Districts, many of whom were charged in state court for drug-related crimes.
Hunter previously pled guilty to a single count of conspiracy to distribute controlled substances in violation of Title 21 United States Code, Sections 846 and 841(b)(1)(B), and Title 18 United States Code, Section 2.
Chief United States District Court Judge William C. Griesbach pronounced the sentence, noting the serious nature of the offense, the effect that Hunter’s actions had on his community, and the scourge that illegal drugs present to society. In addition to his prison sentence, Hunter was placed on 48 months of supervised release.
The case was investigated by the Langlade and Marathon County Sheriffs’ Departments, and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Daniel R. Humble.
Hunter’s actions had a significant impact on the community, and his sentence sends a strong message about the consequences of engaging in large-scale drug trafficking. The people of Wisconsin can rest assured that those who engage in this type of activity will be held accountable.
