A Dearborn man has been convicted of providing material support to ISIS after traveling to Syria, undergoing military training, and swearing allegiance to the terrorist group. Ibraheem Izzy Musaibli, 32, was found guilty by a federal jury in the Eastern District of Michigan following a 9-day trial in Detroit. The jury deliberated less than four hours before returning guilty verdicts on all counts.
Musaibli, a natural-born U.S. citizen from Dearborn, Michigan, was convicted on charges of providing and attempting to provide material support to ISIS, conspiring to provide that support, and attending an ISIS training camp. The evidence presented at trial showed that in 2015, while living in Michigan, he began researching the terrorist organization, downloaded ISIS propaganda, and obtained a guidebook on infiltrating Syria. That April, he traveled to Yemen, then onward to Syria in the fall of the same year.
Once inside ISIS-controlled territory, Musaibli enrolled in an ISIS-run religious training camp before progressing to military instruction. There, he learned to shoot, carry, and handle an AK-47 assault rifle. Upon completing the training, he formally pledged allegiance to ISIS and its leader. He remained embedded with the group for more than two and a half years, fully integrating into its operations.
Musaibli’s run with ISIS ended in 2018 when he was captured by the Syrian Democratic Forces. He was later transferred to the FBI, flown back to the United States, and charged with terrorism-related offenses. His trial, held before U.S. District Judge David M. Lawson, laid bare his deliberate choices to abandon his life in Michigan and join one of the world’s most violent extremist organizations.
“Ibraheem Musaibli traveled halfway around the world and joined a vicious, brutal, and violent terrorist organization known—and proud of—its barbaric acts of terror,” said U.S. Attorney Dawn N. Ison. “Today’s verdicts highlight the dedication of this office, along with our law enforcement partners, in pursuing anyone who poses a danger to the United States—no matter where they are located.”
Musaibli now faces a statutory maximum of 50 years in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for May 11, 2023. “This defendant willingly traveled to Syria, joined ISIS, and attended a terrorist training camp,” said FBI Detroit Special Agent in Charge James A. Tarasca. “Today’s verdict demonstrates to anyone who would seek to contribute to ISIS’s terrorist activities that the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force will be unwavering in its mission to protect the American people by identifying, disrupting, and bringing them to justice.” The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Hank Moon and Michael Martin with support from the National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section.
