HARRISBURG—Grimy Times has learned of a brazen romance scam that resulted in the sentencing of two Ghanaian citizens, Ibrahim Adam and Kelvin Aggrey-Arthur.
According to court documents, Adam, age 33, and Aggrey-Arthur, age 28, were sentenced to prison for conspiring to commit wire fraud.
Adam was sentenced to 33 months’ imprisonment by United States District Court Judge Christopher C. Conner on an unspecified date. On December 17, 2021, Aggrey-Arthur was sentenced to 40 months’ imprisonment by the same judge.
Both sentences also include a two-year term of supervised release, which will follow the term of imprisonment.
United States Attorney John C. Gurganus stated that both men previously admitted to perpetrating a romance scam in 2019 and 2020, in which they and other co-conspirators developed online relationships with victims and then requested that those victims send them money for various fraudulent reasons.
Those reasons included travel, medical treatment, housing, and schooling. Both men were also ordered to pay restitution to victims.
Adam was ordered to pay $94,100 in restitution, while Aggrey-Arthur was ordered to pay $25,100.
The case was investigated by the United States Postal Inspection Service, the Susquehanna Township Police Department, and the Dauphin County Criminal Investigation Division.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Carlo D. Marchioli prosecuted the case.
This is not the first time individuals have targeted victims with romance scams. Grimy Times urges residents to be cautious when engaging with individuals online and to report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
