A brazen identity theft ring, including a former bank employee, has been busted for stealing over $1.6 million from dozens of victims in New York. Catoria Noel, Darren Stephenson, and Imani-Kai Brown were arrested and charged with conspiring to fraudulently take over bank accounts and initiate unauthorized wire transfers and ATM withdrawals. The scheme, which lasted from at least July 2022, exploited sensitive customer information, with Stephenson using his employment at a bank to feed info to his co-defendants.
The co-defendants allegedly posed as bank customers over the phone and in person, intercepting bank debit cards to carry out the thefts. The FBI and the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York collaborated on the investigation, which led to the arrests of Noel and Stephenson in Brooklyn and Brown in Miami.
According to US Attorney Jamie McDonald, the scheme was a coordinated effort to defraud financial institutions and steal from hardworking New Yorkers. The FBI remains committed to holding accountable those who engage in fraudulent and predatory schemes, said Assistant Director in Charge James C. Barnacle, Jr.
The investigation highlights the importance of protecting personal and financial information, as well as the need for vigilance from financial institutions to prevent such schemes. The arrests and charges bring a measure of relief to the dozens of victims who were affected by the identity theft ring.
