Identity Thief Sentenced to 2 Years in Prison
Kamarian D. Millender, a 27-year-old lab technician from Dothan, Alabama, has been sentenced to two years in prison for his role in a massive identity theft scheme.
Millender pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated identity theft, a crime that carries a statutory mandatory sentence of two years in prison. The plea was announced by Deputy Assistant Attorney General Ronald A. Cimino of the Tax Division and U.S. Attorney George L. Beck Jr. for the Middle District of Alabama.
According to investigators, Millender worked at a medical facility in Dothan where he and others stole patient medical records containing personal identification information. They used this information to file false tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), seeking to obtain fraudulent tax refunds.
The scheme was massive, with Millender and his accomplices filing more than 100 false federal tax returns, victimizing approximately 73 individuals and seeking to defraud the IRS out of approximately $536,028. While the IRS was able to stop the majority of the falsely claimed refunds, an estimated $18,915 in refunds were issued.
Millender’s actions were investigated by special agents of the IRS – Criminal Investigation. Trial Attorneys Charles M. Edgar Jr. and Michael Boteler of the Tax Division are prosecuting the case.
As a result of his plea, Millender will be sentenced to serve two years in prison and is subject to a maximum fine of $250,000. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting personal identification information and the consequences of engaging in identity theft and tax fraud schemes.
