BEAUMONT, Texas – A Mexican national, Antonio Hernandez-Perez, 47, has been slammed with federal firearms charges for illegal possession of a firearm while living in the United States without authorization. The grim tale of gunrunning and immigration violations was announced by Acting U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs.
According to the Eastern District of Texas, Hernandez-Perez, an alien illegally present in Nacogdoches, was caught with a firearm on January 30, 2025. This stunning revelation comes amidst Operation Take Back America, a Department of Justice initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration and dismantling cartels.
Operation Take Back America, a coordinated effort by the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN), has been instrumental in this case. If convicted, Hernandez-Perez faces up to 15 years in federal prison, along with being booted out of the country.
This investigation was a joint effort by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives; Homeland Security Investigations; and the Nacogdoches County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Donald Carter is handling the prosecution.
It’s important to note that a federal indictment does not constitute evidence of guilt; Hernandez-Perez is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
Hernandez-Perez’s case serves as another stark reminder of the ongoing battle against illegal immigration and the proliferation of firearms within our communities.
