In Maryland, a pair of previously deported illegal aliens have been prosecuted for re-entering the United States. Carlos Amador Lopez, 30, and Bayron Leopoldo Perez Batres, 64, were charged with illegal re-entry after prior removals. The cases, which were prosecuted by the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland, are part of the nationwide Operation Take Back America initiative.
Lopez, who was convicted of robbery in Nebraska in 2018, was removed from the United States and advised that he was excluded from re-entering due to his conviction. Despite this, he re-entered the country and was sentenced to 10 months in federal prison on July 31. Perez Batres, who was removed from the United States on three separate occasions, pleaded guilty to illegal re-entry on July 28.
The US Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland, led by Kelly O. Hayes, worked with Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva, Field Office Director Robert Guadian of ICE-ERO, and Special Agent in Charge Akil Baldwin of HSI to prosecute the cases. The sentences and guilty pleas mark a significant step forward in the Operation Take Back America initiative, which aims to combat illegal immigration and protect communities from transnational criminal organizations.
The cases highlight the ongoing issue of illegal re-entry into the United States and the efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat it. The US Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland will continue to work with federal and state agencies to prosecute individuals who re-enter the country illegally.
