Derrick Devale White, Heroin Distribution, Illinois 2017

Crime correspondent’s exclusive: A Markham, Illinois, man has been locked away for three years after distributing a lethal dose of heroin that led to an overdose in Dubuque. Derrick Devale White, age 25, was sentenced by United States District Court Judge Linda R. Reade after pleading guilty on August 9, 2017.

White’s crime spree reached its tragic climax on July 17, 2017, when he sold approximately one gram of heroin to a customer who promptly overdosed. The man’s father was forced to call emergency services as his son lay unconscious and struggling for breath. Responders found the victim in critical condition but responsive after police intervention.

White’s brazenness did not end there. He admitted to arranging another sale just one day post-overdose, only to be arrested soon thereafter with .6 gram of heroin on him, within 1,000 feet of a playground and two schools, in clear violation of federal laws.

The court imposed a special assessment of $100 and a six-year term of supervised release following White’s three-year prison sentence. No parole is available under the federal system.

Assistant United States Attorney Dan Chatham prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Dubuque Drug Task Force. For more information on the court file, visit https://ecf.iand.uscourts.gov/cgi-bin/login.pl.

White is currently in the custody of the United States Marshal’s Service as he awaits transport to a federal prison. Follow @USAO_NDIA for updates on federal crime news.
