India Schatzman, a 47-year-old postal employee from McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania, has been charged with stealing a gift card from the mail. According to a federal indictment, Schatzman stole the gift card on December 30, 2022, while working as a postal employee.
The indictment, which was announced by Acting United States Attorney Troy Rivetti, charges Schatzman with one count of mail theft. The law provides for a maximum total sentence of not more than five years in prison, a fine of not more than $250,000, a term of supervised release of not more than three years, or a combination thereof.
Assistant United States Attorney William B. Guappone is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government. The United States Postal Inspection Service conducted the investigation leading to the indictment in this case.
An indictment is an accusation, and a defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. Schatzman’s case will proceed through the courts, and she will have the opportunity to defend herself against the charges.
The case highlights the importance of mail security and the need for postal employees to uphold the trust placed in them. It also serves as a reminder that theft and other crimes can have serious consequences.
The United States Postal Inspection Service will continue to work to protect the public and ensure that those who commit crimes are held accountable.
