Indianapolis Felon Sentenced for Mail Theft, Gun Possession

INDIANAPOLIS – In a grim turn of events, Derrick Barbour, 28, also known as Derrick Barbour, Jr., was handed a 175-month federal prison sentence for his role in a mail theft scheme that involved the possession of a machine gun. Barbour’s criminal activities, which included altering checks from the U.S. Postal Service, were deemed to pose a significant threat to public safety.

Convicted on multiple counts, including unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and bank fraud, Barbour was ordered to pay $3,203 in restitution to his victims. The U.S. Attorney Steven D. Weinhoeft emphasized the defendant’s dangerous combination of violent weaponry and financial crimes.

Court documents revealed that on February 10, 2023, police found Barbour at a gas station in Marion County, Indiana, with a Glock 9mm handgun, equipped with a machinegun conversion device, as well as other firearms. Additionally, authorities recovered stolen checks valued at over $1.2 million and two arrow keys used to access mailboxes.

Special Agent in Charge Dennus Bishop of the U.S. Postal Service’s Office of Inspector General praised the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies involved in the investigation. “The OIG remains committed to safeguarding the U.S. Mail,” Bishop stated.

The sentence underscores the consequences faced by those who engage in mail theft and firearms violations, a stark reminder of the gravity of such offenses.
