A Indianapolis resident has been caught red-handed in a brazen COVID-19 relief loan scam that left victims in the Western District of Pennsylvania struggling to make ends meet.
Antranette Echols, 57, of Indianapolis, Indiana, pleaded guilty to two counts of wire fraud before United States Senior District Judge Nora Barry Fischer in a federal court in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
According to court documents, Echols prepared and submitted falsified COVID-19 pandemic relief loan applications for borrowers, taking a fee in the process. Some of the victims were located in the Western District of Pennsylvania.
Assistant United States Attorney Gregory C. Melucci is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government, with the Federal Bureau of Investigation conducting the investigation that led to Echols’ prosecution.
Echols is facing a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison and a fine of up to $1 million, or both. Under the federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed will be based on the seriousness of the offenses and Echols’ prior criminal history, if any.
