Prison Inmate Caught with Homemade Shank

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – In a shocking turn of events, a federal correctional institution in Beckley has seen one of its inmates get caught in possession of a homemade weapon, sending shockwaves throughout the community.

Elijio Perez, 30, of Texas, has been sentenced to 12 months in prison to run consecutively to the sentence he is currently serving. The incident occurred on March 31, 2020, at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) at Beckley.

According to court documents, Perez had possessed a handcrafted weapon, described as a piece of metal about 9 ½ inches long and sharpened to a point on one end. The staff member who discovered the weapon had found it on the floor between a desk and a wall in an office at the prison after Perez had placed it there.

Perez admitted to designing and intending to use the shank as a weapon. This incident highlights the ongoing issue of prison contraband, and the measures being taken to ensure the safety of both inmates and correctional staff.

Acting United States Attorney Lisa G. Johnston made the announcement, commending the investigative work of the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Assistant United States Attorney Timothy D. Boggess handled the prosecution, with United States District Judge Frank W. Volk imposing the sentence.

The incident has sparked concerns about the security of the prison and the measures being taken to prevent such incidents in the future. The case serves as a reminder of the dangers of prison contraband and the importance of vigilance in keeping our correctional facilities safe.

The sentence of 12 months is a clear indication that possession of contraband in prisons will not be tolerated. As the community continues to grapple with the issue of prison safety, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of maintaining a secure environment for all inmates and correctional staff.
