A 49-year-old Iowa City man admitted in federal court today that he possessed a loaded pistol despite being barred from owning guns due to prior felony convictions. Joshua Brown entered a guilty plea in Cedar Rapids before U.S. District Judge C.J. Williams, acknowledging he had a firearm on July 18, 2020 — a clear violation of federal law.
Brown admitted during the hearing that he had previously been convicted of two serious offenses: unauthorized possession of an offensive weapon in Johnson County in 1995, and possession of a firearm by a felon in Cedar County in 1996. Both convictions carried potential prison terms exceeding one year, making his later possession of a firearm a federal crime punishable by up to ten years behind bars.
Prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Iowa said the case was part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), the Department of Justice’s national initiative targeting violent offenders. PSN leverages federal, state, and local law enforcement resources to dismantle criminal networks and reduce gun violence through targeted prosecutions.
Brown currently remains free on bond as authorities await the preparation of a presentence investigation report. Sentencing has not yet been scheduled. If sentenced to the maximum term, Brown could serve ten years in federal prison, pay a $250,000 fine, and be placed on three years of supervised release upon his release.
The investigation was a joint operation involving the Cedar Rapids Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Linn County Sheriff’s Office. The coordinated effort underscores the multi-agency push to remove firearms from the hands of violent felons under PSN’s framework.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Tremmel is prosecuting the case. Court records, filed under CR 21-14, are accessible through the Northern District of Iowa’s electronic filing system. Follow updates from the U.S. Attorney’s Office on Twitter @USAO_NDIA.
