Devonta Cobbs, Armed Firearm Possession by a Drug User, Iowa 2024

SIoux City Man Gets 2+ Years for Armed Drug Possession

Devonta Cobbs, a 23-year-old from Sioux City, Iowa, has been sentenced to over two years in federal prison for illegally possessing a firearm while using and selling drugs.

On May 3, 2024, United States District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand handed down the 34-month prison term to Cobbs, who had pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm by a drug user on January 19, 2024.

According to evidence presented in the case, Cobbs admitted to using marijuana and possessed multiple firearms from May 2022 to June 2022. During an investigation into a shooting incident, officers executed search warrants on Cobbs’ property and found several guns, ammunition, magazines, over $2,000 in cash, and marijuana.

The case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a Department of Justice initiative aimed at reducing violent crime. PSN focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs for lasting reductions in crime.

Cobbs is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison. He will also serve a 2-year term of supervised release after completing his prison term, with no parole available in the federal system.

The case was investigated by the Sioux City, Iowa Police Department and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Forde Fairchild.

Cobbs’ prison sentence serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of combining firearms with illicit activities. As the Department of Justice continues to prioritize violent crime reduction efforts, cases like Cobbs’ will remain a crucial part of the conversation.
