Trenton Sliekers, Possessing Firearm as Felon, Iowa 2024

A Waterloo man has been sentenced to eight years in federal prison for his role in a brazen shooting incident that left a community shaken.

Trenton Sliekers, 28, received the prison term after pleading guilty to possessing a firearm as a felon. According to court documents, Sliekers used the firearm to shoot six times from a motorcycle at a residence that was occupied by multiple people, including children.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident, but one of the bullets lodged in a couch cushion. The shooting sparked an investigation by the Waterloo Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

U.S. District Court Judge C.J. Williams was unimpressed by Sliekers’ actions, calling him a ‘violent man’ and ‘very dangerous person.’ The judge noted that Sliekers had at least three prior crimes involving violence and continued to ‘commit crime after crime after crime.’

Sliekers will serve 96 months in federal prison, followed by a three-year term of supervised release. He is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.

The case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime through enforcement efforts and community partnerships.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jake Schunk and investigated by the Waterloo Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
