Irick Dron Oneal, Sex Trafficking of a Child, Texas 2016

A Midland man, Irick Dron Oneal, 43, was convicted Wednesday by a federal jury on one count of sex trafficking of a child, a charge that carries a maximum sentence of life in prison. The verdict culminates a years-long investigation rooted in a digital trail of exploitation and a nationwide FBI operation aimed at rescuing child victims.

The crime unfolded on October 14, 2016, when law enforcement responded to online ads posted on Backpage.com offering sex with a minor. Agents tracked the activity to a hotel in Odessa, where they found the 15-year-old victim upon arrival. Surveillance placed Oneal in the hotel parking lot, waiting, at the time authorities took the girl into protective custody.

Prosecutors presented evidence showing Oneal orchestrated the commercial sexual exploitation of the child, using the internet to advertise and facilitate the crime. His arrest occurred the same day agents rescued the victim, and he has remained in federal custody since October 2016, awaiting trial and now sentencing.

The investigation emerged from Operation Cross Country, a nationwide FBI initiative conducted October 13–14, 2016, targeting child sex trafficking rings. The operation led to the rescue of numerous minors across the U.S. and the arrest of dozens of traffickers, including Oneal.

Local and federal agencies collaborated on the case, including the Odessa Police Department, Texas Department of Public Safety Criminal Investigations Division, and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). The FBI’s El Paso Division, led by Special Agent in Charge Douglas E. Lindquist, oversaw the probe with support from U.S. Attorney Richard L. Durbin, Jr.’s office.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Glenn Harwood prosecuted the case as part of Project Safe Childhood, a Department of Justice initiative launched in 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation. Sentencing for Irick Dron Oneal has not yet been scheduled. The conviction underscores the federal government’s aggressive pursuit of those who prey on children through digital platforms and street-level trafficking alike.
