ROSEBUD, SD – Isaiah Beck, 19, of Rosebud, South Dakota, is facing serious federal charges after a grand jury indicted him in September of 2022. Beck allegedly possessed an unregistered firearm and was prohibited from owning one due to unlawful controlled substance use.
According to court documents, the alleged offenses occurred on May 9, 2021, and June 25, 2022, in Todd County. The indictment details that Beck was in possession of a firearm with a barrel length of less than 18 inches, and the weapon wasn’t registered in his name. This isn’t a simple paperwork issue; it suggests a deliberate attempt to conceal an illegal firearm.
Beck appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on January 19, 2023, entering a plea of not guilty. If convicted, Beck could face a decade behind bars, along with a hefty $250,000 fine. The court can also impose three years of supervised release and a $100 contribution to the Federal Crime Victims Fund, and may order restitution.
Federal authorities are framing this case as part of “Project Safe Neighborhoods” (PSN), a nationwide initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. The program seeks to bolster trust between law enforcement and communities, support local violence prevention groups, and focus enforcement efforts where they’re needed most. The Department of Justice launched a renewed strategy in 2021, emphasizing these core principles.
The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Assistant U.S. Attorney Abby Roesler is leading the prosecution. Beck remains in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, awaiting a trial date set for March 28, 2023.
It’s crucial to remember that the indictment is merely an accusation, and Beck is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. However, the charges themselves paint a concerning picture, raising questions about the proliferation of unregistered firearms and the role of substance abuse in violent crime within the Rosebud community. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it unfolds.
