Brent Wayne Vostad, Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person, South Dakota 2021

Aberdeen man Brent Wayne Vostad, 37, was sentenced to 120 months in federal prison for possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, according to a federal indictment.

The sentencing occurred on November 29, 2021, in the U.S. District Court in Aberdeen, South Dakota.

On February 27, 2021, Vostad was found with a loaded handgun, methamphetamine, small plastic baggies, and a scale, after a traffic stop conducted by the Aberdeen Police Department.

Vostad was previously convicted of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year.

As part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) program, Vostad was charged with violating federal law, specifically 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(1), which prohibits a person convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence from possessing a firearm.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Cameron J. Cook prosecuted the case. The Aberdeen Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives investigated the crime.
