ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO – A brutal assault left a woman with serious bodily injuries in 2023, and now the assailant is facing the consequences. Isiah Gutierrez-Arquero, 29, a resident of Española and an enrolled member of the Santa Clara Pueblo, pleaded guilty to federal assault charges in connection with the attack.
According to court records, on September 21, 2023, Gutierrez-Arquero attacked Jane Doe in the early morning hours. The assault was nothing short of brutal, with Gutierrez-Arquero punching and kicking her, throwing her against a wall, and strangling her with both hands. As a result of the assault, Jane Doe sustained serious bodily injuries.
Gutierrez-Arquero pleaded guilty to assault by strangulation and assault resulting in serious bodily injury. At sentencing, he faces up to 10 years in prison for each felony charge. Upon his release from prison, he will be subject to three years of supervised release.
The investigation into this heinous crime was led by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Assistant U.S. Attorney Zachary Jones is prosecuting the case.
The U.S. Attorney for the District of New Mexico, Ryan Ellison, made the announcement. Ellison stated that justice will be served for the victim, and that the community can feel safe knowing that those who commit such crimes will be held accountable.
