RUTLAND, VT – Ivan Carmona, 32, of Springfield, Massachusetts, will spend the next nine years behind bars after being sentenced for assaulting a federal agent and illegally brandishing a firearm. The sentencing, handed down on December 13th in U.S. District Court, brings a measure of closure to a November 2021 incident that unfolded in the remote Northeast Kingdom region of Vermont.
The trouble began when Carmona, already wanted by state and local authorities for unspecified crimes, made a run for it. U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) agents from the Newport Station were assisting in the manhunt, suspecting Carmona might attempt to cross into Canada. Agents located Carmona and an accomplice walking along Bear Mountain Road near North Troy, Vermont on November 18, 2021. When asked for identification, Carmona bolted, triggering a foot pursuit.
According to court records, the situation escalated quickly. As a USBP agent pursued Carmona, the fugitive allegedly drew a loaded handgun and pointed it directly at the agent. This brazen act of violence could have easily turned deadly, officials said. Fortunately, the agent was unharmed, and a multi-agency task force quickly converged to apprehend Carmona.
The arrest involved a coordinated effort from a range of law enforcement agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Air & Marine Operations (Customs and Border Protection), the Orleans County Sheriff’s Department, the Vermont State Police, the Newport Police Department, and the Vermont Drug Task Force. The sheer number of agencies involved highlights the seriousness of the threat posed by Carmona.
“Our law enforcement partners make our communities safer every day,” stated U.S. Attorney Nikolas P. Kerest. “They deserve our respect and support. When law enforcement officers are assaulted while doing their jobs to enhance public safety, this office will respond with the full extent of our resources.” ATF Special Agent in Charge James M. Ferguson echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the ATF’s commitment to holding violent offenders accountable. Carmona received 108 months’ imprisonment followed by a 3-year term of supervised release.
The case falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a Department of Justice initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Lasher prosecuted the case, while Carmona was represented by Assistant Federal Public Defender Sara Puls. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers and the importance of swift and decisive action against those who threaten their safety. “Law enforcement officers put their lives on the line,” said Ferguson, “and all too often those acts of violence are directed against them.”
