In a shocking turn of events, J. M. Paxton, owner of the infamous Paxton’s Uiet, was arrested on November 21, 1907, for the alleged theft of a valuable mattress from 626 Kansas Avenue. The crime took place just hours before the arrest, as Paxton’s business advertised the sale of ‘one of the best Felt mattresses made’ for a mere $1000. Eyewitnesses reported seeing Paxton hastily removing a mattress from the premises, only to sell it to an unsuspecting customer.
