RALEIGH, N.C. – In a shocking display of violence, a Raleigh man was sentenced to 30 months imprisonment for attempting to set fire to a marked police vehicle in the city’s downtown area.

The incident occurred on May 31, 2020, at approximately 12:31 a.m. outside the Raleigh Police Southeast District Station in Raleigh. A fire was discovered coming from the fuel filler area of the police vehicle, causing approximately $5,000 in damage.

Jabari Devon Davis, of Raleigh, was arrested by special agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF) on June 4, 2020, and charged with one count of attempting to damage or destroy by fire a vehicle owned or possessed by an institution receiving federal financial assistance.

According to court documents, Davis admitted to intentionally setting the police vehicle on fire after leaving a protest. He claimed to have poured gasoline on a sock and set it alight, causing the fire to spread to the vehicle.

The investigation was conducted by the Raleigh Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), with Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel W. Smith prosecuting the case.

U.S. District Judge James C. Dever III handed down the 30-month sentence, bringing an end to a case that sparked widespread concern over public safety in Raleigh.
