WILMINGTON, N.C. – Justice came down hard for Stanley Kearney Jr., 27, of Kittrell, North Carolina. Yesterday, he was sentenced to 190 months – more than 15 years – in federal prison for his role in a pair of brazen armed bank robberies that rattled the Eastern District of North Carolina.
The first target: a SunTrust Bank at 7320 Creedmoor Road in Raleigh, hit on December 6, 2019. Kearney, along with three other men, stormed the bank wielding firearms and made off with $11,578.00. Witnesses reported a white Hyundai Elantra as the getaway vehicle. Less than a month later, on December 30, 2019, the crew targeted a Branch Bank & Trust (BB&T) at 2475 Stantonsburg Road in Greenville, netting a much larger haul of $72,853. Again, a white Hyundai Elantra was spotted fleeing the scene.
Law enforcement caught up with Kearney on January 10, 2020, during a routine traffic stop. Instead of cooperating, he attempted to flee, escalating the situation. Faced with mounting evidence, Kearney ultimately confessed to participating in both the SunTrust and BB&T robberies, detailing his involvement to investigators.
Kearney wasn’t acting alone. His codefendants – Clifton Harris, Cameron Evans, and Joshua Bailey – have all been implicated in the heists. Harris has already received an 81-month sentence. Evans and Bailey are currently awaiting their fate, scheduled to be sentenced in the coming weeks. The investigation revealed a coordinated effort to target banks across Eastern North Carolina.
U.S. Attorney Michael Easley for the Eastern District of North Carolina announced the sentencing, handed down by Chief U.S. District Judge Richard E. Myers II. The case was a collaborative effort, involving the Davie County Sheriff’s Department, the Raleigh, Greenville and Mebane Police Departments, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Leonard Champaign and Barbara Kocher led the prosecution.
For those seeking further details, court documents related to Case No. 4:20-CR-00071-M are available on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina website or through the PACER system. This conviction sends a clear message: armed bank robbery will not be tolerated in Eastern North Carolina, and those who commit such crimes will face serious consequences.
