WILMINGTON, N.C. – Another lowlife headed to federal prison. Stanley Kearney Jr., 27, of Kittrell, North Carolina, was sentenced to 190 months – that’s 15 years and 10 months – yesterday for his role in a pair of brazen armed bank robberies that terrorized the Raleigh and Greenville areas in late 2019.
The first score went down December 6th, 2019, at the SunTrust bank on Creedmoor Road in Raleigh. Kearney, along with three other men, stormed the bank wielding firearms and made off with $11,578.00. Witnesses reported the crew peeled away in a white Hyundai Elantra. Less than a month later, on December 30th, they hit a BB&T branch on Stantonsburg Road in Greenville, this time netting a significantly larger haul: $72,853. Again, a white Hyundai Elantra was spotted fleeing the scene.
Kearney’s luck ran out on January 10, 2020. Pulled over for routine traffic violations, he attempted to run from law enforcement. That only dug his hole deeper. During questioning, Kearney confessed to participating in both the SunTrust and BB&T robberies. He wasn’t working alone. Clifton Harris, Cameron Evans, and Joshua Bailey have also been identified as codefendants in the case.
Harris already received 81 months in prison for his involvement. Evans and Bailey are still awaiting their day in court, presumably hoping for a lighter sentence. But Kearney’s 190-month stretch should send a message: armed bank robbery doesn’t pay, at least not in freedom. U.S. Attorney Michael Easley for the Eastern District of North Carolina announced the sentencing, handed down by Chief U.S. District Judge Richard E. Myers II.
The investigation was a multi-agency effort, involving the Davie County Sheriff’s Department, police departments in Raleigh, Greenville, and Mebane, and the ever-present Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Leonard Champaign and Barbara Kocher led the prosecution, building a solid case against Kearney and his crew. They clearly did their job.
For those seeking further details, court documents related to Case No. 4:20-CR-00071-M are available on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina website or through PACER. This case serves as a grim reminder that even in a state as seemingly peaceful as North Carolina, violent crime continues to plague communities.
