A brutal attack in a rural Oklahoma town left a young man paralyzed, and now the perpetrator has been brought to justice. A federal jury has convicted Jace Christian Williams, 23, of Miami, Oklahoma, of maiming in Indian Country and assault resulting in serious bodily injury in Indian Country.
The crime occurred on November 3, 2017, in Afton, Oklahoma. Williams, a classmate of the victim, had expressed anger towards him in the days leading up to the attack. The victim had allegedly interfered with Williams’ attempts to engage in a romantic encounter with two women.
On the day of the attack, Williams and two friends drove to a location where a fight was supposed to take place. The victim and other students also arrived at the scene. Williams suddenly approached the victim from behind and slammed him head-first onto the ground, rendering him paralyzed.
The victim was transported to a hospital in Joplin, Missouri, where he sustained a C6-7 fracture-subluxation with bilateral locked facets and paralysis. He remains paraplegic to this day.
U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson praised the FBI, Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, and federal prosecutors for their investigation and prosecution of the case. ‘Jace Williams’ anger and ego led to an assault that paralyzed his victim,’ Johnson said. ‘His conduct was intentional, violent, and criminal.’
Williams opted to plead guilty to the charge of assault resulting in serious bodily injury in Indian Country just before closing arguments. The defendant’s conduct was deemed intentional, violent, and criminal, and he will now face the consequences of his actions.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions, especially when those actions result in serious harm to others. The victim in this case will never be able to regain the use of his arms and legs, a stark reminder of the severity of Williams’ crime.
