In a stunning case of prolonged evasion, Jackie Pieter Boer, a 67-year-old man from Eugene, Oregon, has been sentenced to nine months imprisonment for failing to file a tax return for the year 1984.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa, Boer was originally indicted in 1989 but failed to appear at his scheduled initial appearance and arraignment. For nearly twenty-five years, Boer evaded capture, until he voluntarily contacted the United States Attorney’s Office to resolve his outstanding case.
On February 18, 2015, Judge Robert W. Pratt handed down the nine-month prison sentence, along with one year of supervised release following his imprisonment. A $25,000 fine was also imposed.
The case was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation, and prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.
Boer’s case is a stark reminder of the consequences of tax evasion. By failing to file a tax return, Boer avoided paying his fair share of taxes, depriving the government of much-needed revenue.
The $25,000 fine imposed on Boer is a significant penalty, but it is a small price to pay for the years of evasion and the resources spent on catching him.
The case serves as a warning to those who would try to evade taxes. The government will pursue those who try to cheat the system, and those who are caught will face severe consequences.
