Iowa Man Sentenced to Prison for Filing False Tax Return
A federal judge has sentenced a St. Charles, Iowa man to 12 months and one day in prison for filing a false income tax return.
Jay A. Ochanpaugh, 50, of St. Charles, Iowa, was sentenced by United States District Judge Stephanie M. Rose on March 25, 2015, for filing a false income tax return for the calendar year 2009.
Ochanpaugh will be required to serve one year of supervised release following his release from prison, and will be required to cooperate with the Internal Revenue Service to pay his tax liability. Ochanpaugh will be required to surrender to the United States Bureau of Prisons at a date to be determined.
According to court documents, Ochanpaugh admitted to filing false income tax returns for the calendar years 2007 through 2010, underreporting his business income, which resulted in a tax loss of at least $80,000. Ochanpaugh is in the insurance sales business, working for Ochanpaugh Financial Group, LLC.
Ochanpaugh will not be permitted to continue to sell insurance as a result of this conviction. The investigation was conducted by the Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation, and the case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.
