Jeremy Cousin, 29, of Jackson, is going away for a decade after a botched attempt to rob a gas station at gunpoint, culminating in a shootout that left him bleeding on the floor and facing federal time. On November 10, 2016, U.S. District Judge Henry T. Wingate handed down a 120-month federal prison sentence, followed by three years of supervised release. Cousin was also slapped with a $1,500 fine.
The violent incident unfolded the morning of August 17, 2015, at the Super Star Gas Station located at 914 Terry Road in Jackson. Surveillance footage and witness testimony reveal Cousin walked in, yanked a bandana over his face, and flashed a firearm. He then moved fast—lunging toward the counter, demanding access to the back area where cash is handled. What he didn’t count on was a clerk packing heat.
As Cousin forced the door behind the register open, the store clerk opened fire, hitting him in the leg. The round dropped Cousin mid-heist. Bloodied and weaponless, he was powerless as the clerk dialed 911. Responding officers recovered the 9mm handgun Cousin had used, a key piece of evidence that sealed his fate. The gun was processed and later tied directly to the defendant.
Federal prosecutors wasted no time building the case. Under the Hobbs Act, which criminalizes interference with interstate commerce through robbery or extortion, Cousin was charged with attempted armed robbery. The law is a go-to for federal prosecutors in violent heists, especially when local businesses are involved and weapons are brandished.
The investigation was a joint operation between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Jackson Police Department. Their collaboration turned forensic evidence and eyewitness accounts into a bulletproof case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Chris Wansley led the prosecution, pushing for maximum accountability under federal sentencing guidelines.
U.S. Attorney Gregory K. Davis confirmed the outcome, stating, “Violent crime on this level will be met with full federal force.” Cousin now begins his 10-year sentence with no early release in sight, a grim end to a robbery that went off the rails in seconds.
