Tulsa Man Sentenced to 10 Years in Federal Prison for Role in Murder of Man on Bicycle

A senseless act of violence in Tulsa, Oklahoma, has been met with justice as Jacob Bruce Banks, 22, was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for his role in the murder of Maurice Burgess, a man riding a bicycle.

Banks was driving a car with codefendant Devon Blevins in the passenger seat when Blevins leaned out the car’s window with a pistol and shot Burgess. Banks then drove Blevins away from the murder scene and helped dispose of the murder weapon to hinder the investigation.

On April 12, 2021, Banks’ codefendant, Devon Blevins, shot and killed Maurice Burgess in a senseless act of violence. Blevins, 29, of Tulsa, was found guilty of first-degree murder in Indian Country and causing death by using and discharging a firearm during the commission of first-degree murder. He was sentenced to life in federal prison on October 20, 2022.

U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson stated, “Oklahomans should not have to fear being gunned down in their own communities.” Johnson’s office will continue to work with law enforcement to bring those responsible for violent acts to justice and make the community safer.

The Tulsa Police Department and FBI conducted the investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Ryan H. Heatherman and Michael F. Harder prosecuting the case.

Banks was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of law enforcement working together to keep communities safe.
