Defendant Handed 13-Year Sentence for Heinous Crime
In a shocking turn of events, 34-year-old Jacob Daniel West of Conroe, Texas, has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for his involvement in the interstate transportation of a minor for sex. The disturbing case unfolded in January 2013 when West, a neighbor of the victim’s parents, began a twisted relationship with a 14-year-old girl.
According to court documents, West traveled with the minor through several states, including Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, New York, Virginia, and the Carolinas, before arriving in Florida. The victim had a history of engaging in sex acts with West, who exploited his position of trust to manipulate the young girl.
On January 28, 2013, the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office in Ft. Pierce, Florida, apprehended West after observing him engage in sex acts with the victim in a hotel room. The subsequent arrest revealed a shocking tale of abuse and exploitation.
During the investigation, authorities discovered that West had stolen an AR-15, handguns, money, and credit cards from a deceased friend in Texas prior to leaving the state with the victim. This heinous act of theft further highlights West’s depraved disregard for the law and the well-being of others.
U.S. District Judge Sim Lake, who accepted West’s guilty plea on July 11, 2013, handed down the sentence of 156 months in federal prison to be followed by 15 years of supervised release. West will also be required to register as a sex offender.
The case, prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Sherri Zack, was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children, and to identify and rescue victims.
West will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined in the near future. The FBI and U.S. Marshals Service investigated the case, bringing a measure of justice to the victim and her family.
