A Pittsburgh man is facing serious federal charges for his alleged role in distributing a deadly opioid. Jacob Palaski, 26, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh on a charge of violating federal narcotics laws, Acting United States Attorney Soo C. Song announced today.
The one-count indictment names Palaski as the sole defendant, accusing him of distributing and possessing with intent to distribute a quantity of a mixture and substance containing a detectable amount of fentanyl, a Schedule II controlled substance. This charge stems from an incident that occurred on or about July 9, 2016.
Fentanyl is a highly potent and often lethal synthetic opioid, responsible for thousands of overdose deaths across the United States. The drug is frequently laced with heroin or other substances, increasing its deadliness. By distributing this substance, Palaski allegedly put countless lives at risk, contributing to the devastating opioid epidemic gripping the nation.
The law provides for a maximum total sentence of not more than 20 years in prison, a fine not to exceed $1,000,000, or both. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed would be based upon the seriousness of the offense and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant. This means that Palaski could face significant time behind bars if convicted.
Assistant United States Attorney Katherine A. King is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government. The investigation leading to the indictment was conducted by the Peters Township Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration. These agencies have worked tirelessly to combat the opioid crisis, and their efforts have led to the indictment of Palaski.
An indictment is an accusation, and a defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. As the case against Palaski moves forward, the prosecution will need to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. The outcome of this case will have significant implications for the community, as it seeks to hold accountable those responsible for perpetuating the opioid epidemic.
The charges against Palaski are a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle against drug trafficking and the opioid crisis. As law enforcement agencies continue to crack down on these crimes, it is essential for the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. By working together, we can help prevent the spread of these deadly substances and keep our communities safe.
