Jacob Reed, a 43-year-old Sissonville man, is headed to federal prison after being sentenced to three years and five months for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. The sentence, handed down today in Charleston, W.Va., marks the end of a case that began with a routine traffic stop but exploded into a major drug bust.
On February 14, 2016, law enforcement pulled over Reed’s vehicle for traffic violations. What started as a standard stop quickly turned criminal. A search of the car revealed a camera bag on the front passenger floor stuffed with cash and multiple plastic bags of methamphetamine. Inside, officers recovered more than 230 grams of the potent drug.
But the evidence didn’t stop there. Hidden in the center console, investigators found nearly $15,000 in cash and a digital scale — a combination that screams distribution. The amount of drugs and money, paired with drug paraphernalia, left no doubt about Reed’s intent, federal prosecutors said.
Reed, facing overwhelming evidence, pleaded guilty to the charge before United States District Judge Joseph R. Goodwin, who ultimately imposed the sentence. Assistant United States Attorney Monica D. Coleman prosecuted the case, calling it a clear-cut example of mid-level trafficking operating in plain sight.
The investigation was led by the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office and the Metropolitan Drug Enforcement Network Team (MDENT), a multi-agency task force built to dismantle drug networks across West Virginia. Their work, officials say, disrupted a stream of poison flowing into struggling communities.
This case is part of a broader crackdown by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia, which has made methamphetamine a top target. With federal, state, and local agencies united, the push continues to shut down pill mills, dismantle trafficking rings, and reclaim neighborhoods from the grip of addiction and crime.
