A Chicago pharmacy technician has been sent to prison for stealing thousands of opioid pills and selling them for a profit.
Jacqueline Green, 28, of Chicago, was sentenced to a year and a day in federal prison for her role in stealing approximately 56,108 pills of Hydrocodone from Allcare Discount Pharmacy in Chicago.
According to court documents, Green and her co-defendant, Elizabeth Cruz, conspired to steal the pills from October 2015 to December 2017. The duo then sold the stolen pills outside the pharmacy, netting at least $10,800 in proceeds.
Green pleaded guilty earlier this year to one count of conspiracy to possess a controlled substance with the intent to deliver. U.S. District Judge Ronald A. Guzman imposed the prison sentence on Green on Wednesday in federal court in Chicago.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Nani M. Gilkerson argued in the government’s sentencing memorandum that Green’s actions contributed to the national opioid epidemic, making opiates available on the street to individuals who should not have access to them.
The DEA has been working closely with the U.S. Attorney’s Office to bring violators to justice and ensure pharmacies and their employees handle dangerous pharmaceutical medications responsibly.
Cruz, of Stone Park, also pleaded guilty to the same charge as Green. Her sentencing is set for September 5, 2019, at 2:00 p.m.
