Armed and Fleeing: Kalamazoo Man Charged for Gun Possession
A 23-year-old Kalamazoo man, Jaeontae Moore, has been charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm after he fled into a crowd of runners at the Kalamazoo Marathon.
According to authorities, Moore was in a car during the marathon on May 5, 2024, when Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officers attempted to contact him. Moore fled the scene and was apprehended a short distance away.
Officer Ondreya Anderson, who was running in the marathon, witnessed the incident and called for backup. ‘Thanks to her quick actions, no one was injured,’ said KDPS Chief Dave Boysen. ‘The suspect was safely taken into custody and the firearm that he illegally possessed was recovered.’
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are investigating the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney LaToyia Carpenter prosecuting it. Moore faces a maximum of 15 years in prison if convicted.
The charges in an indictment are merely accusations, and a defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in a court of law.
Moore’s case highlights the dangers of gun violence and the importance of community vigilance. ‘Every person, regardless of where they live, deserves to live their life and enjoy their community free from the fear of gunfire,’ said U.S. Attorney Mark Totten.
