In a major blow to human traffickers, a notorious Iranian national has been charged with smuggling hundreds of illegal aliens into the United States. Jafar Tafakori, 57, was arrested in Colombia at the request of the US government on an indictment that alleges he coordinated the smuggling operation from December 2022 to May 2024.
According to the indictment, Tafakori brought in large numbers of aliens, mostly Iranian nationals, and charged them up to $30,000 for his services. The smuggled individuals were then directed to cross the US-Mexico border and enter the country illegally. The operation was a brazen exploitation of the US immigration system, depriving authorities of the opportunity to vet and review the individuals entering the country.
The indictment, unsealed in the Western District of Texas, marks a significant victory for law enforcement. “Securing our borders and stopping alien smuggling is a top priority for the Department of Justice,” said Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. “Thanks to the hard work of our prosecutors and investigative partners, this individual was arrested and brought to justice.”
Tafakori’s arrest is a testament to the US government’s commitment to combating human trafficking and immigration crimes. The case highlights the complexities of the issue and the need for continued vigilance in protecting the country’s borders.
The indictment charges Tafakori with various counts of alien smuggling, and his fate will be determined in a Texas court. The case serves as a warning to those involved in similar operations: the US government will not tolerate the exploitation of its immigration system and will pursue those who seek to undermine it.
