Jake Miller, Tax Evasion, Massachusetts 2025

Jake Miller, 42, of Natick, has been sentenced to one year and one day in prison for concealing $1.6 million in income from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Miller, the owner of a commercial and residential roofing business, pleaded guilty to one count of tax evasion in February 2025. He was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Brian E. Murphy and will also serve one year of supervised release.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Miller owned and operated Kostas Roofing under the alias “Paul Kostas” rather than his own name. Between 2013 and 2021, he cashed checks from roofing customers and deposited the proceeds into his personal bank accounts, failing to file income tax returns for any of these years.

As a result, Miller evaded income taxes of approximately $450,000. He has been ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $449,329. The sentence is a significant blow to Miller, who had been able to avoid paying taxes on his substantial income for nearly a decade.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney David M. Holcomb of the Criminal Division. United States Attorney Leah B. Foley, Tom Demeo, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigation in Boston, and Ketty Larco-Ward, Inspector in Charge of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service’s Boston Division, announced the sentence.

The investigation and prosecution of Miller’s tax evasion scheme demonstrate the commitment of law enforcement agencies to holding individuals accountable for their financial crimes. The sentence serves as a warning to others who would attempt to evade taxes and cheat the system.

In a statement, U.S. Attorney Leah B. Foley emphasized the importance of tax compliance and the consequences of tax evasion. The case against Miller is a reminder that tax evasion is a serious crime with significant penalties, and that those who engage in such activities will be held accountable.
