Anchorage man charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm during an encounter with the police.
Jalen Baker, 23, a resident of Anchorage, is facing federal charges stemming from a September encounter with Anchorage Police.
On September 23, 2024, Baker was involved in an incident where two victims were shot in Anchorage, according to court documents and a press release from the Anchorage Police Department.
Police officers responded to the scene and located the suspect, Baker, in a nearby trailer home park. The suspect fired at responding officers, striking one in the lower body, and barricaded himself inside a trailer home.
Baker had a prior felony conviction for assault in the State of Alaska in 2022, at the time of the event. The investigation identified Baker as the suspect and he was taken into custody at the scene.
Baker is charged with one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm and one count of possession of a firearm at a school zone. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
The case is being investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Anchorage Police Department, with assistance from the Alaska State Troopers. Assistant U.S. Attorney Cody Tirpak is prosecuting the case.
An indictment is merely an allegation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
