Tavoy Farquharson, a 34-year-old Jamaican national, is heading to federal prison for a whopping 40 months after getting caught in a massive lottery fraud scheme.
According to the Department of Justice, Farquharson was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Brendan A. Hurson in Baltimore, Maryland, for his role in the elaborate scam. Judge Hurson also tacked on two years of supervised release to Farquharson’s sentence, effectively keeping him under the microscope for the next four years.
The scoundrel was charged with conspiracy to commit mail fraud, a serious charge that carries steep penalties. It’s unclear how much money Farquharson and his cohorts managed to swindle, but it’s safe to say it was a significant amount. Their scheme was sophisticated and convincing, but ultimately, it was their undoing.
Lottery scams have been a persistent problem in recent years, with victims losing millions to these types of schemes. The schemes often start with email or phone calls from scammers claiming to have won a large sum of money and need help transferring it to the United States.
Farquharson’s case is a grim reminder that these types of scams are all too real and can have devastating consequences for victims. It’s also a testament to the tenacity of law enforcement agencies, who worked tirelessly to bring this scoundrel to justice.
The Department of Justice is urging anyone who may have been a victim of this scam to come forward and report their experiences. They can contact the U.S. Postal Inspection Service at 1-877-876-2455 or visit their website at postalinspectors.uspis.gov.
In a statement, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland said, “This sentence should serve as a warning to anyone who would seek to profit from these types of scams: you will be caught, and you will face the consequences.”
Tavoy Farquharson’s 40-month sentence is a significant blow to anyone who thought they could get away with these types of crimes. It’s a reminder that the justice system is watching, and it will not hesitate to bring perpetrators to justice.
