Jamal Bazley, Felon in Possession of Firearm, Louisiana 2022

New Orleans Man Sentenced for Gun Charges in Louisiana

In a significant blow to violent crime in New Orleans, Jamal Bazley, a resident of the city, was recently sentenced for being a felon in possession of a firearm. The 80-month prison sentence handed down by U.S. District Court Chief Judge Nannette Jolivette Brown is a stern reminder of the consequences of such crimes.

The charges against Bazley stem from an incident on June 2, 2020, when investigators arrested him and his co-defendant for being felons in possession of firearms. During the arrest, law enforcement attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Bazley, but he refused to stop and fled into the parking lot of a Home Depot located near the intersection of S. Claiborne Ave. and Earhart Blvd in New Orleans, LA.

As investigators observed, Bazley and his co-defendant exited the vehicle and fled on foot. Once the scene was secure, investigators found a rifle and two handguns within the immediate area of the vehicle, as well as ski masks and a pair of gloves on the front passenger floorboard.

The case was prosecuted as part of the joint federal, state, and local Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Program, which has been proven to be effective at reducing violent crime. This evidence-based program focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs for lasting reductions in crime.

U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans praised the work of the Federal Bureau of Investigations in this case. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Inga Petrovich of the Violent Crime Unit of the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

In addition to the 80-month prison sentence, Bazley was also ordered to serve 3 years of supervised release and pay a $100 mandatory special assessment fee.

This case is a prime example of the efforts being made to reduce violent crime in Louisiana and holds Bazley accountable for his actions.
