Natchez Man Pleads Guilty to Possessing a Machine Gun in Grimy Times
Jamarhi Raheem Lucas, 23, of Natchez, Mississippi, faces a statutory penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine after pleading guilty to possessing a machine gun.
On September 22, 2018, Lucas attempted to flee from law enforcement officers as they approached him outside a residence on Ouachita St. in Natchez. He was detained and a short-barreled rifle that was fully automatic (machine gun) was found in his car. The machine gun was seized by the officers.
Lucas was charged in a federal indictment on June 12, 2019, with possessing a machine gun and possessing a machine gun not registered to him in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Bert Carraway and Glenda Haynes.
This case is part of Project EJECT, a holistic, multi-disciplinary approach to fighting and reducing violent crime through prosecution, prevention, re-entry and awareness. Project EJECT stands for “Empower Justice Expel Crime Together.”
Lucas will be sentenced by Judge David C. Bramlette III on June 4, 2020. His guilty plea brings an end to a lengthy investigation into the possession of a machine gun in Natchez, Mississippi. Our community will be safer with this guilty plea, said U.S. Attorney Mike Hurst. We will continue to work tirelessly to hold accountable those who attempt to bring firearms and violence to our streets.
Project EJECT is an initiative by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Mississippi, under the U.S. Attorney’s Office’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) and Project Guardian. Project Guardian draws upon the U.S. Attorney’s Office’s past successful programs to reduce gun violence and enhances coordination of federal, state, local, and tribal authorities in investigating and prosecuting gun crimes.
Natchez, Mississippi, is a city that has seen its fair share of violence and crime. This guilty plea is a significant step towards reducing that violence and making the city a safer place for its residents.
