A Memphis man has been charged with armed robbery after stealing $118,942 from a Dunbar Armored courier. James Edward Lacey, Jr., pleaded guilty to the crime, which occurred on August 18, 2016.
According to court documents, Lacey pepper-sprayed the courier at 2424 Summer Avenue and made off with the money. The driver of the Dunbar Armored truck fired one shot, hitting Lacey in the right side of his body. Lacey then fled on foot and got into the passenger side of a black Jeep Liberty.
A Memphis Crime Stoppers tip was received on August 24, 2016, with specific information and details alleging the crime was committed by Lacey.
Prior to the robbery, Lacey was arrested on August 13, 2016, for being a felon in possession of a Kel-Tec 9mm pistol. His criminal history dates back to 2008.
Lacey faces up to 30 years in prison and a $500,000 fine. Sentencing is set for May 12, 2017, before the Honorable U.S. District Judge Sheryl H. Lipman.
The case was investigated by the FBI’s Safe Streets Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin Whitmore is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government.
A spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office said Lacey’s guilty plea is a significant step in bringing justice to the victims of this crime.
The investigation into Lacey’s activities is ongoing, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office is working to ensure that those responsible for this crime are held accountable.
