James Kareen Day, Armed Robbery, Maryland 2023

In a string of brazen armed robberies, James Kareen Day, 43, of Landover, Maryland, left a trail of businesses shaken and victims traumatized. The series of crimes, which took place between December 2022 and February 2023, saw Day commit three armed robberies and four attempted armed robberies across Howard, Montgomery, and Prince George’s County, Maryland.

Day’s modus operandi involved brandishing a short-barrel shotgun while demanding cash and valuables from the businesses and victims. He fled with money and other property, leaving a trail of destruction in his wake.

The case against Day is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by bringing together law enforcement and the community. The program, launched by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, focuses on fostering trust and legitimacy, supporting community-based organizations, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring results.

U.S. District Judge Theodore D. Chuang sentenced Day to 16 years in prison, followed by five years of supervised release, for his crimes. The sentence was announced by Kelly O. Hayes, U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland, who commended the FBI, Howard County Police Department, Montgomery County Police Department, and Prince George’s County Police Department for their work in the investigation.

The investigation, led by the FBI’s Baltimore Field Office, involved multiple agencies working together to bring Day to justice. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Dawn Williams and Timothy Hagan prosecuted the case.

Day’s crimes have sent shockwaves through the community, leaving many wondering how such a brazen series of crimes could go on for so long. However, the sentence handed down by Judge Chuang offers some measure of closure for the victims and their families.
