James Kellems, Bank Robbery, California 2010
A notorious bank robber, James Kellems, 54, has pleaded guilty to a string of brazen bank robberies that shook the quiet towns of Campbell and Capitola in California in 2010.
Between October 25, 2010, and November 12, 2010, Kellems robbed two banks in Campbell and one in Capitola, netting a whopping $8,140.00 in the process.
The first robbery took place on October 25, 2010, at the Bank of America branch located in the Pruneyard, Campbell, where Kellems made off with a meager $3,020.00. However, his next two heists proved more lucrative, with the Bank of the West branch at 3820 Capitola Road, Capitola, being hit for $5,400.00 on October 30, 2010, and First Bank, 790 East Campbell Avenue, Campbell, being robbed of $720.00 on November 12, 2010, after Kellems threatened a female teller with the use of a gun.
Kellems, a career offender with multiple prior bank robbery convictions, now faces up to 20 years imprisonment on each count. His sentencing hearing is set for December 5, 2013, in front of The Honorable D. Lowell Jensen, U.S. District Court Judge.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas O’Connell and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Meredith Edwards are prosecuting the case with the assistance of legal tech Tracey Andersen. The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Campbell Police Department, and the Capitola Police Department.
Kellems’ guilty plea brings a sense of closure to the victims and the community, who were left shaken by the string of robberies. While the exact amount of time Kellems will serve remains to be seen, one thing is certain – justice has been served in this case.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of community policing and the tireless efforts of law enforcement agencies in keeping our communities safe.
