Letitia James Urges Senate to Reject SAVE America Act, New York NY,…

New York – In a stark rebuke to the proposed Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE America) Act, New York Attorney General Letitia James has led a coalition of 11 state attorneys general in urging the U.S. Senate to reject the legislation.

‘The right to vote in free and fair elections is fundamental to our democracy,’ AG James stated. ‘The SAVE America Act represents an unconstitutional power grab, threatening to dismantle modern voter registration systems that millions rely on for access to the ballot box.’

The coalition argues that the act would impose unnecessary documentary proof-of-citizenship requirements, effectively eliminating online and mail-in voter registration, and undermine states’ authority over elections. It is estimated that 21 million voting-age citizens lack ready access to required documents, and nearly 80 percent of married women would be disenfranchised.

AG James emphasizes that citizenship verification is already in place for federal elections, with robust state and federal systems in place. She adds that noncitizen voting has never been shown to impact election outcomes, while documentary proof-of-citizenship requirements have led to the disenfranchisement of tens of thousands.

The attorneys general call on the Senate to reject the SAVE America Act and protect state sovereignty, maintaining the fundamental right to vote for all Americans.

Joining AG James are the attorneys general of California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Mexico, Oregon, and Washington.
