James Prescott III, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Maine 2020
A Brunswick man was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to a federal court ruling.
James Prescott III, 28, was found guilty of possessing a firearm despite being prohibited from doing so under federal law. Prescott’s conviction stems from a 2015 Theft by Receiving Stolen Property conviction, which resulted in a term of imprisonment exceeding one year.
On September 22, 2020, the Brunswick Police Department received a call from a burglary victim who reported that his vehicle had been stolen and his firearm taken. The victim described a suspect wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, black pants, and a blue hospital mask.
A short time later, officers with the Topsham Police Department encountered a male matching the victim’s description and recovered a stolen firearm from him. Prescott was identified as the suspect and subsequently arrested.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Brunswick and Topsham police departments as part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative.
Prescott pleaded guilty to the charges on April 27, 2021, and was sentenced to 18 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. The sentence was handed down by Chief U.S. District Judge John D. Levy.
The Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative aims to reduce violent crime by bringing together federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement officials, prosecutors, community leaders, and other stakeholders to identify and address the most pressing violent crime problems in a community.
