In a shocking case of prescription pill trafficking, a Texas doctor has been charged with distributing millions of opioid pills on the black market. James Robles, a 70-year-old medical doctor from Weslaco, Texas, allegedly ran a cash-only clinic in Houston where he sold prescriptions for controlled substances to “crew leaders” who would then resell them on the streets.
According to court documents, Robles conspired with others to illegally prescribe oxycodone, hydrocodone, and carisoprodol, all highly sought-after controlled substances on Houston’s black market. Between 2018 and 2022, Robles allegedly prescribed over 2.9 million pills of hydrocodone, 1.3 million pills of oxycodone, and 1.1 million pills of carisoprodol. The scheme, which lasted for just over four years, generated over $2 million in cash, which was deposited into bank accounts controlled by Robles.
The indictment, unsealed on April 2, 2026, charges Robles with one count of conspiracy to distribute and dispense controlled substances and one count of distributing and dispensing controlled substances. The charges carry significant penalties, including up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $1 million.
Robles’ alleged scheme involved recruiting “patients” who would pose as legitimate customers, but in reality, were just middlemen in the trafficking operation. The prescriptions were then filled at complicit pharmacies and resold on the black market. The investigation, which is ongoing, has revealed a complex web of corruption and deceit that has left a trail of destruction in its wake.
The case highlights the ongoing struggle to combat the opioid epidemic, which has ravaged communities across the United States. As the nation grapples with the devastating consequences of prescription pill trafficking, cases like Robles’ serve as a stark reminder of the need for increased vigilance and accountability in the medical community.
Robles is currently free on bond, but his freedom is likely to be short-lived. With the indictment now public, the clock is ticking for the doctor to face justice for his alleged crimes.
